We visit organisations and assess what they are doing and ensure that they are doing it safely. We focus on fire safety and health and safety in order to prevent fires and accidents. We create and deliver complex technical assessments in plain and simple language that non-technical people can understand. Saving lives is too important to be done half-heartedly!

Most of STK's staff are ex-serving fire officers. This means we have personally witnessed numerous examples of when fire safety and health and safety has gone wrong. For example, attending large fires and many industrial accidents.This means that we do not wish anybody we work for to witness the things we have seen.

We employ 10 full-time and 5 part-time staff. We are looking for people who are interested in the fire industry, these may be people who wanted to join the fire and rescue services but have not yet been successful. Do you know that fire doors save more lives than fire fighters? We want to train new people in the understanding of fire safety and fire behaviour to the benefit of our communities.

I manage the day to day business activities. This can be looking after the team and our customers, answering questions, writing company policies, ensuring that we have the right equipment in the office for staff to do their job and interviewing those who are looking to work with us. We have lots of training opportunities within the business. These include health and safety, manual handling, fire safety awareness, fire marshall training and many more. We also keep up to date with new legislation (laws) and regulations that are created. We must never stop learning due to the nature of the business.

For my role, you need to have good people skills. This means you will need to communciate well by being patient, understanding and listening to your staff and customers. You will also need to stay calm and be positive when problems arise and use your problem-solving skills to find a solution.

Yes ultimately. There is an expectation that a good fire risk assessor should have NEBOSH plus the NEBOSH 'Fire' Module. However, this is not an expectation for people who want to join us. We will support people through these key qualifications and other sector specific qualifications when they work with us.

I help to save lives. To do this I have various roles as a Fire Safety Manager. I meet people from other companies and carry out fire risk assessments at their properties. I check if fire protection systems are designed, tested, maintained and are following the right codes and standards. I also offer knowledge and support to all our customers every day! My most important work is to take all this technical stuff and write the customers a report in simple language about what they need to do to be safe.

This was not my first job. I was a Non-Ferrous Metals Technician working in an analytical laboratory. Non-ferrous metals are those which do not contain iron, are not magnetic and are resistant to damage. An example of these metals are aluminium, copper, brass, lead, zinc and stainless steel.

After finishing college, I worked as a technician in industry. A couple of years later, I applied to join the fire service and successfully passed the entrance exam and physical tests. After 32 years and a lot of hard work, I retired from the Fire Service and was taken on by a fire risk assessment company. I worked as a self-employed consultant offering my knowledge and experience to others. Once I had developed my risk assessment skills, I got in contact with someone I used to work with in the Fire Service. They said there was a position as a Fire Safety Manager at STK and this is where I work today!

I help to save lives! This is how: I am very often the first person that a customer speaks to. This is very important as the customer is often asking about problems they find complicated or is a worry to them due to the life-preserving nature of the work we do. I reassure them that no matter how complicated it seems, we can help them. I communicate through clear and concise emails and telephone conversations. Following that, I collect all the relevant information of delivering a service to our customer, for example a fire risk assessment. For this I would contact one of our assessors and ensure that they have all the information they need to complete the job. As well as supporting our technical assessors, I have projects of my own such as organising our workshops to potential future customers. For this I collect information about the people attending and provide them with information and support packs.

No, I had an internship with an environmental science company in my home country (Spain) before I moved to England. I helped to put recycling methods in place to help the local environment. I would go out to conduct field surveys, take samples and collect data about pollution or contamination and how it is affecting the area we live in. We would look at the data collected and think of solutions that would help the environment. At this point, I knew I wanted to do a role where I would actively be helping, promoting and improving the local community.

When I finished university, I applied to Gecko Programmes and was accepted on their Erasmus+ scheme. Erasmus+ allows students (UK and other European countries) studying particular certificates and qualifications to go work abroad. I was offered a part-time administrator role at STK. I was very happy as I wanted to improve my skills, and this was something that would allow me to do that. After 3 months, STK offered a full-time permanent position. I was given the important responsibility of preparing the training sessions and assisting the technical and development projects.

At STK, the work we do covers all industries and areas of work. This means you meet new people all the time. They can be from care homes, schools, factories or office buildings. As every single person works in a different type of building, their problems, issues and scenarios are different. It is really interesting to see how our solutions can be applied to all of areas of work. Everything we do is to prevent the loss of life. I am very proud to be part of it.

I have had dynamic risk assessment training, DSE assessment training, asbestos training, Fire Marshall training and manual handling training. All of these are internal courses provided by STK. External courses are those provided by another certified company. I have completed IOSH Managing Safety, Evacuation Chair Training and Managing Projects (by Gecko Programmes).

You need to be able to multi-task as you are doing many different jobs. You need excellent communication skills, IT/word processing and good organisation. You should be able to work under pressure and in a team. A positive attitude is essential!
