Being a Business Support Apprentice (myself being within Marketing) is not just a desk job. It is a desk job, an up and about job and a job that requires comon sense as well as knowledge of the Company that work for in great depth. My job includes many things from internal and external communication, running and organising events, running volunteer and in house projects, in house administration and internal processes. I also have to do business development, networking, ownership of digital projects such as app development and web development. I even cover Front of House and postal duties in times of staff absence. This list could go on. It is a busy and fast paced environment but also a lot of fun.

I looked online and on Apprentice websites. I found In-Comm, an Apprenticeship training provider that were advertising for a role at FBC Manby Bowdler. I gave them a call and enrolled with them. I had an interview and did a basic English and Maths test. They helped me apply for a Job and got me an interview. I attended with my CV and covering letter and the rest is history.

To ensure the firm is compliant within it's regulatory obligations. The duties involved are conflicted checking, data reviewing and primarily working alongside the fee earners in opening new and existing client matters. When we are taking new instructions from new or existing clients, we have to ensure we conduct a level of client due diligence and make sure the clients are who they say they are. In order to do this, we have to complete anti money laundering and sanctions checks on all our clients and complete conflict checks across the database.

The process was quite simple. After applying online I was invited to attend an interview. In the interview I was asked a mixture of standard and competency based questions and why I thought I would be good for the role. The competency questions are set out for you to give an example of a time that you have experienced something specific that could fit into the role that you are applying for.

The file opening process is always changing with every client so you feel like every case is different, and sometimes you are required to investigate a little bit further. Also, I work with a wonderful team who are always available to support you with any queries that you may have.

Initially I received one on one training with an experienced member of the team. This involved me sitting with her and watching her work through different cases whilst taking notes. I then started to work on cases myself with her sitting with me so that she could provide guidance and support. This continued until I was comfortable enough to work the cases along with me only asking for support when needed.

The ability to work without supervision and a good teamwork ethic are great skills to have in this role. You need to be able to show a solid understanding of compliance and risk and have logical and investigative skills.
